Art Cafe

If you weren’t aware, we had our second art curation event! The theme for this one was “Darkness”. We’ve received all valid participants and are going to be doing some announcements soon. So, be on the lookout!

DAO Proposals

Just one proposal was brought forward through the month of March. Proposal #23, initiated by Whaleshark himself, details an idea to increase the $WHALE liquidity monthly mining rewards from 8,000 to 10,000 $WHALE. With the total value of the liquidity pool sitting at approximately $4.5 million, this proposal would accelerate the growth of the pool in order to maintain price stability and prepare for future growth and volume. The community agreed, with the proposal overwhelmingly supported. It has moved on to the Senate.

Proposal #23 has since passed and is now active.

Vault Acquisitions

No new art purchases occurred throughout March, however, a number of pieces from Crypto OG’s, that have spent a long period of time isolated in lockdown, have transferred over from Nifty Gateway, SuperRare, and Known Origin.

Multiple XCOPY 1/1 pieces found their home in the Vault, having been purchased over 6 months ago. XCOPY’s recent Nifty Gateway drop Traitors was hugely successful, earning the artist over $2 million in sales.

13 pieces from Pak’s X by Murat Pak Nifty Gateway drop, purchased an eternity ago (last year), have snuck in as well. With growing hype due to Pak’s upcoming Sotheby’s auction, these earlier pieces are digital gold!

Two Luigi Honorat pieces from their L’Envers Series has entered the Vault. The L’Envers Series was a very limited Nifty Gateway drop from 7 months ago, with only three 1/1 editions available! Through good fortune or an expert eye, Whaleshark was able to win 2/3 pieces in the auction.

NFT Market Recap

Have NFT’s finally gone mainstream? Throughout March, we saw ground-breaking sales, commentary from large media institutions, and more NFT users and holders than ever before.

Beeple, the unofficial king of Crypto art, had quite the month. Following on from his Crossroads secondary resale for $6.6 million, his Christie’s auction of his piece, EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS, sold after a hard fought bidding war for $69 million. That is not a typo. $69 million! The piece represents the first 5,000 days of his challenge to make one piece of art everyday, which he has now done for over 13 years. The purchaser, Metakovan, is a big believer, having also created the B20 initiative, by far the easiest way to get exposure to Beeple as an artist. This sale puts Beeple at 3rd on the list of highest grossing art sales by a living artist.

EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS by beeple

Using the Valuables platform, where users can mint their tweets and sell them as collectibles, Jack, creator of Twitter, auctioned off the first tweet ever made in Twitter history. Bids came flowing in, sparking discussions of an NFT bubble. Bubble or not, the historic tweet sold for $2.9 million, making it the highest selling tweet to date. Jack stated that all proceeds were heading to charity.

An original Banksy piece has been burned by the owners and sold as an NFT. The piece titled Morons (last sold in 2006 for £16,250) is a critique on the art market itself. The owners took things to the next level, blurring the lines of physical and digital value, by burning the art in a livestream and selling an NFT in its place. Did this create value? Is the NFT now valuable or are the ashes? What would Banksy think? We aren’t sure, but this does seem on-brand for Banksy, who previously pulled a stunt of shredding his own art work in front of a stunned crowd, immediately after it sold at auction.

Mainstream media are starting to catch the NFT fever. While some posted the inevitable ‘NFT is a bubble,’ others chose to dig a little deeper. Time magazine released a set of four 1/1 Time covers from the 50’s and 60’s. The four pieces each sold for around 120 Ether on SuperRare. Their most recent cover asked the question: Is Fiat Dead? and with those large sales, it’s certainly arguing its case well.

Missed out on some of the biggest NFT projects like CryptoPunks or Hashmasks? Then fear not! People have started straight up copying entire NFT projects to the Binance Smart Chain. Bashmasks, Binance Punks and Musical Beats have arrived, and they look no different. They appear to be money grabbing scams and not minted by the original creators, so any potential purchasers should remain vigilant and skeptical.

The environmental impact of NFTs became a large talking point throughout March, with both traditional and crypto artists debating it’s impact. How much of the energy used in the Ethereum network relates to NFTs? How much of that energy is renewable? How many resources does a traditional painting use? These are not easy questions to answer, however they are valid concerns. With Proof-of-Stake Ethereum set to be completed sometime in the near future, this would alleviate many of these issues we currently face. In the meantime, a group of artists took it upon themselves to make a change. They came together to create The Carbon Drop, a Nifty Gateway drop with all proceeds going to charity, in an effort to make the NFT space carbon neutral. With big artists such as Beeple, Refik Anadol, Fvckrender, GMUNK and many more, the drop was a huge success, garnering about $6.7 million in sales.

In the News

Paris Hilton recently spoke to Whaleshark on her podcast and has been active in the NFT community. If there is any celebrity that is getting huge brownie points in the space, it’s Paris. Not only is she following a lot of people, she is also actively talking to, and engaging in activity around it. We are very excited to see what she has cooking up in the background, and we are actively looking forward to her further innovation and time spent here.

Behind the scenes, 1337 and whaleshark were toiling away at how to make a boom in the space. Well, they did! The 1337 website was officially released, and along with it was a giveaway!
